Reflective Markers

Quintic Automatic Digitisation

Reflective markers are designed to be used with Quintic Sports, Coaching & Biomechanics software. There are three options, spherical, hemispherical & flat 2D disc markers, all of which are covered with reflective tape. The reflective markers come in a range of sizes (see below). The markers can be attached to human skin, clothes or specific objects… for example, golf clubs, bicycle, ball, shoes or even a horse! When using reflective markers, a light is required to highlight the markers. A camera with manual shutter speed is required to create clear images, especially when filming a fast moving object…

2D, flat markers are the most common and cheapest form of markers. They are waterproof and have a long reflective life span. The 2D markers provide excellent tracking as long as the movement is in plane. It is however possible to still track upto 25 degrees out of plane with these 2D markers. The 2D markers are available in 30mm, 25mm, 19mm, 15mm, 9mm, and 5mm diameter. They come with double sided sticky tape attached as standard.

The hemispherical markers are a popular choice in the Equine world, large surface area to attach the marker to the horse, with the spherical nature allowing greater than 20 degree movement out of plane to be captured.

3D markers are made with machined hemispheres and a center threaded cylinder resulting in greater spherical accuracy and identification of the marker centroid. The markers offer improved retro reflectivity at greater distances and at lower exposure threshold settings than traditional markers. The hemispherical pieces of the durable high gain reflective material cover each marker and are joined with a very small seam at the equator. The 3D markers are available in 6.4mm, 9.5mm, 12.7mm, 14.0mm, 15.9mm, and 19.0mm spheres and come with a a soft base as standard.

Quintic Autotracking reflective markers

Quintic would always recommend 2D flat markers when filming with multiple cameras. This is to minimise the chance of markers crossing over. A spherical marker would typically be used if any movement out of plane occurs (upto 20 degrees), the marker will still give maximum surface area for reflection. Please see case_studies/20_Degrees

It is also possible to use plain white markers (Spherical, hemispherical & flat disc) with a black background border within Quintic. These are particularly useful when filming outdoors and you don’t have a light source to illuminate the markers.
