Words by: Malcolm Arnold
1) This frame shows Jason in the ‘set position without tension, waiting for the report of the gun. shoulders are slightly beyond the line, with the head in natural alignment with the spine. Concentration is paramount at this point, with the brain waiting for the signal to react.2) This frame shows that the signal has been received, with the hands off the ground, the rear foot just leaving its block and the front foot driving hard against the block.3) This frame shows continuation of the action, with arms driving, well aligned. Particularly good is the body angle, eyes focussed on the track. The right foot continues its strong pressure against the front block. The left foot is being brought through quickly, ready for its first strike on the ground, just beyond the start line.4) This frame shows the continuance of the driving action. Observe that Jason is very deliberately picking up his left knee so that his left foot can strike at the track.5) This figure shows the left foot down and in a good position underneath his body.6) This figure shows the continuance of the left leg drive.7) This figure shows the drive of the left leg almost complete. The body angle is good.8) This figure again shows a good body angle, with a strong arm action. Athletes should always strive to drive the elbows backwards. The right foot is again in contact with the track, in a good position under the body. Remember – good foot contact, no wobbles, everything in balance!9) This figure shows that after two foot strikes, Jason is establishing a lead and is putting his fellow competitors under stress – a good first psychological blow against the enemy!10) This figure shows the left foot coming through for the third strike, still with a good forward leaning posture and strong arm actions.11) This figure shows the body angle becoming more upright. After ten strides, the body will be in the usual sprinting mode.12) This figure shows Jason completing his fifth stride, in the lead. The race is now well set up for success.
