Isinbayeva Pole Vault Sequence – 5.00m
Yelena Isinbayeva’s pole vault analysed frame-by-frame
Words by: Steve Rippon
1) Yelena has excellent high knee running technique and carries the pole high in the early part of the run. The left hand is chest high and in the middle of the body. Right hand relaxed and by her hip.2) There is a gradual lowering of the pole through out the run up. Pole is lowered by raising the right hand and using the left hand as a fulcrum.3) Two steps from take off you can see the pole is parallel to the ground. Left hand still chest high with left elbow below the left wrist. Right hand is under the armpit and turn outwards.4) One step from take off the pole tip is 30cm from the ground. Right hand head high with left hand in front of the body.5) Left foot actively claws back and the pole slides into the box early. Right hand is extended as high as possible to create maximum ground pole angle.6) On take off the pole just makes contact with the back of the box. Eyes look through the take off. Chest is open and arms are pushing upwards but are relaxed. Right knee drives up and through the take off.7) A fast and vigorous swing of the left leg in conjunction with closing of the shoulders rolls the pole forward while the vaulter inverts.8) The leg swing continues through the middle part of the jump into the pike position. The pike position should be achieved while the pole is at maximum bend.9) In the pike position Yelena legs cover the bend in the pole. Her hips are above her shoulders. She drives her shoulders down while keeping her hands close to her legs.10) This picture shows great extension still with small amount of bend in the pole. There are very few world class vaulters that get in this position like Yelena.11) Yelena can now use the last part of the pole recoil in conjunction with her vigorous drive from pike into extension to help her push off the pole.12) Yelena finishes the jump off with a nice bar clearance position. High hips, ears next to shoulders rolling around the bar. Land deep. Land safe.
