Spotlight on Sayers – Javelin Throw
Frame-by-frame analysis of a 61.45m javelin throw
Words by: John Trower
1) Excellent side-on position of Goldie Sayers, although slightly ahead of herself at this point. However excellent control of the implement and very balanced moving forward through the cross overs.2) Evidence of being slightly ahead of where she should be is shown in this frame – although well lined up and achieving good extension off the ground with the left leg at this point she could be a little more behind herself – reaching back more.3) As a consequence the final extension of the left leg is compromised and the effectiveness of the impulse stride suffers just enough to cut short this phase of the movement. However, alignment and sight line are not compromised and one gets the feeling that everything is moving forwards in the throw.4) Despite what I have said in frame three good sightline and forward movement assist the body in achieving an excellent opportunity to launch the javelin with good attack.5) Right foot lands between 2 and 3 o’clock ahead of the right knee/hip and shoulder ready to strike. The javelin control is excellent with sight line well set up to this point.6) At this point I would have liked to have seen ‘daylight’ between the heel and the runway of the right foot – she is ‘sitting’ a bit but this skill takes a few years to master! The strike of the hip is compromised with this and although Goldie is continuing to exhibit excellent implement control the length of ‘pull’ and distance will shorten as a result of this.7) At this point I would have liked to have seen ‘daylight’ between the heel and the runway of the right foot – she is ‘sitting’ a bit but this skill takes a few years to master! The strike of the hip is compromised with this and although Goldie is continuing to exhibit excellent implement control the length of ‘pull’ and distance will shorten as a result of this.8) Sight line has gone up and delivery starts a fraction sooner than it should have – this is a result of being slightly ahead of the delivery as shown and described in the earlier frames. This manifests itself by a slight shortening of the throwing hand position (ideally behind the right heel at this point) and a slight dropping of the hip position.9) The hip strike is effective but slightly downward with a non-braced front leg – at this point had she been slightly more behind herself the front leg would have been more braced and create a taller longer delivery. Sightline has departed from its forward direction sooner that it should have done!10) The resultant just prior to release is a piked delivery and full range of delivery not achieved.11) The piked position is more evident and this is not an effective delivery position.12) The piking of the body following release is more evident but the throw is rescued by the very positive and aggressive attack that Goldie has achieved throughout the run up. PB of 61.45m with a less than perfect technical throw but with plenty of attack and aggression. There is scope for improvement and plenty to work on this winter!
